Omnia mutantur, Nihil interit
Omnia mutantur, Nihil interit is a work for solo flute written for Francesca Arnone. The title is Latin for the phrase “everything changes, nothing perishes,” and is loosely based on a transgender person’s social and/or medical transition: while they may change how they present themselves, they are inherently the same person they were before their transition. This concept was realized by composing an interval row to generate pitch material, and transforming that row as the piece goes on. By the time the flautist switches to the alto flute, the material has undergone all transformations (fragmentation, augmentation, diminution) but the tone row continues to exist and influence the pitch content.
