growing pines

growing pines is inspired by the concept of growth and change in regards to places (specifically, cities and small towns). As people inhabit new spaces, they transform them to fit their needs and support their interests. Additionally, the more time someone spends in a place, the more they witness that place grow to fit the needs of other people who inhabit it. Consequently, this may mean places no longer fit one’s needs or support their interests. As a result, one may find peace with leaving a place they inhabited most of their life, as they have “outgrown” the place, and the place has “outgrown” them.

This concept is conveyed by introducing stark musical material, and transforming that material to the point where it is unrecognizable.

growing pines was premiered by USF Flute Studio flautists Maryem Bendaoud, Tommy Liu, and Gabrielle Small, under the direction of Francesca Arnone.
